Using this blog to document my successes (and failures) as I attempt to transform my sterile boring garden into something marvelous!
I’ve recently moved house and the current garden, although well-kept, is fairly boring. Majority of the plants are large garish bushes and shrubs, which offer little to local wildlife and are not that interesting to look at.
THE GOOD: nice lawn; good border space; some lovely small flowering bushes; a bay tree; fairly tidy shrubs; rose bushes still flowering in November!
THE BAD: overgrown ivy, bare borders, some bushes are too tall and in need of a good trim
THE UGLY: a LOT of cracked and uneven crazy paving; short broken fences; thousands of weeds…
THE VISION: My ultimate aim is to have a garden that is pretty to look at all year round and has plenty of plants for pollinators and birds. I am definitely leaning towards a wild/natural and country garden feel but realise that a lot more work goes into maintaining this than you think!
So for now i’ll settle for cottage garden and wildflowers mixed in with some large hardy shrubs that are easy to maintain and give structure all year. In the long run i’d like to introduce a couple of small fruit trees (apples/plums) and eventually vegetables and herbs in large raised planters. It’d also be nice to replace the paving (when I have the money) and get a nice set of garden furniture and fire-pit to warm up the cold sheltered patio area

So much potential! Looking forward to seeing your progress. I am on my second clay soil garden, it can be tricky but you will get there! Gardening is so great for health. Best of luck with your battle. You will win!

Thank you! Taking a small break because I’m off to hospital (and the weather) but I can’t wait to carry on with it
